HYPNO KOMIX COMMUNIQUE #2:

Okay. So you’ve had the experience.

You engaged the alchemical conjunction of image, text, soundscape, and sacrament.

You lipped along with the incantations.

The glyphs and graphs and grids unfolded into doorways and staircase spirals and anamorphic Escherplexes.

And you fell in a bit, didn’t you? Maybe it felt like entertainment, mostly,

but the Beast at work within this feast unknown, it bit you.

So you did it again. You needed to be sure.

You needed to know that recipe for an epiphany was religious, made of actual Otherness, and not some sleight of mind.

That second time, or maybe the third

(magazine. soundscape. sacrament. magazine. soundscape. sacrament.),

you realized that it WAS a trick.

And that it doesn’t matter. It’s ALL a trick.

Matter is obviously MADE of the friction between conflicting funhouse refractions.

A vision is a vision is a vision, by any other name.

And now there’s a need in you.

The world as you knew it just isn’t much of a world anymore.

None of the angles are as sharp as they used to be.

Even the curves have gone all fuzzy at their edges.

The faces and the spaces you behold outside the ceremony don’t seem to contain enough information.  Things seem to have more pixels, on the Other side.

More colors. More texture. More expressive possibilities.

The fourth time in just isn’t the same, or it’s too much of the same.

Maybe you just need to let it settle and sink in and fill in all your blanks.

Or maybe you need to get fixed more fiendishly with a more sustainable epiphany.

Is HYPNOCULTURE just a deranged pulp writer’s fantasy?

It clearly induces a new way of seeing, but deeply in its codes and contours,

does it not suggest a new way of BEING?

When you know the text like it’s a voice in your head

and you can keep the collage of it suspended in your psyche as you contemplate

and rhapsodize each of its pieces.

You need to know. You need to know if it all comes true, if there’s a myth that

makes sense of what’s happening to you. As we speak. As I speak. As you listen.

So you go looking for HYPNO, don’t you?

Half-hoping HYPNO will find YOU, that its fractured angels and avatars will meet you half-way at some crossroads between your reality and its eternity, knowing you by name and leaving you with a briefcase full of hissing silver secrets.

You do the obvious thing.

You go to all the bookstores, all the music dispensaries, all the consumer cathedrals, searching the webs for your spider.

There’s plenty of HYPNO product, on the streets and in progress.

KOMIX and alien objects of art and lush soundtracks to imaginary movies too vivid to ever be filmed.

The Surrealist pulp frenzy of “OTHERMAN & THE ORAKULOIDS”.

The jingoistic hardboiled superspy psychosis of “AMERIKAN ZER0!”.

The HyperGoth beach movie romance of “TEENAGE LUVKRAFT”.

The fairy-tale philosophical horror of “SILVER MEAT SUITE”.

The flashy and vicious supernatural decadence of “ACE OF RAZORS”.

The Kabuki sci-fi fetish opera of “PSYCHEDELIKA SEXUALIS”.

And so on. And so on. All these worlds, so alive on their own terms, each with its own physics and ambience, mingling their delicate tendrils almost imperceptibly to form a sentient tapestry of HypGnostic narrative.

You buy it all. And your mind has never been so utterly aflame with alien ideas.

But you keep coming back to HYPNOZINE, like it’s the key harmonic around which these many pantheons revolve. Or like it grows in the spaces between them.

These multiplying mythologies have a richness that competes with life, at times threatening to replace it, but it never does. Not completely. Not completely enough for your strange tastes, which are getting stranger by the second. Art is only art. But this feeling that all this art refers to something real is unshakeable. Art invading life, exposing life as more of the same.

If it’s all Art, then Art is EVERYTHING.

You make cautious inquiries amongst the others who follow these beings, these imaginary superstars. You want someone to tell you that it’s all true, like you knew it would be, and that they believe it, too. How do you ask fundamental questions like that without seeming schizoid or becoming so in the act of asking?

They all dismiss your questions as comedy, sometimes a little too defensively.

It feels like something bigger than time has been hidden from you, like it’s known and imbibed by all these consumers of Hypno shit, like you haven’t been initiated. Like you forgot your magic word. You will come to find that some of those consumers did indeed taste Tomorrow, and it was all too much for them. They went skittering back to the by-products, trying to forget the truth of things, or the lack thereof.

Like Three Dollar Billy, who runs an alternative culture boutique called Chapel Perilous. You’ve been going there a lot. He knows you on sight, not because you’re popular in these circles, but because he knows that hungry look all too well. The look of the seeker, hungry for revelation. Billy’s been there. He’s been lots of places. His clothes are so future that they’re never in fashion. His figure has known more chemicals than nutrients. His eyes are the censored screens of a cracked astronaut. But he flew too high above the labyrinth, he says. Too close to the hot white Nothing of absolute consciousness. His plumage burned up in re-entry. He crashed in the backwash of life as we know it and grew roots at the scene. Neurologically excluded, now, from the futuristic revels of yesterday.

When you ring the bell of entry to his den and skitter sheepishy past the still-buzzing clublings who pollute it (kids who would be pure Hypno hooligans if such things could ever be), finally sick of all the obfuscation, walking right up to 3DB (who was once spun from the stuff of legend) you lay it on the line. He knows you’re up to date. He’s sold you all the HYPNO product there is, thus far. That you know of, anyway. You remember the magic words now because you’re at last too desperate to keep on forgetting.

“Do you have anything…stronger?”

He smiles like Devils smile when the contract is signed. He recedes into back-room shadows and returns with a sealed silver bag, with something soft inside that vibrates, slightly. Like something astronauts would eat, if they let space change them like it wants to. No need to be discreet. Every egghead is cracked in here, or scrambled altogether. He gives you yet another set of directions. And another episode of HYPNOZINE. An address where more sounds and prayers and invocations can be collected. The drug is different, now. It’s the fruit of a more abstract garden, or a wilder one. You ask him what you “do” with this stuff.

“You PLAY it”, he says. “You eat the menu, turn the page, and you PLAY the fucker.”

A splashy advertizement, like an evocative movie poster or an advert for a video game, advertising the life of Adam Zer0, perhaps patterned on those “Army of One” military ads,  pastiched or psychedelicized into an “Army of Zero” ad.  The narration is in the second person, inviting the player (or reader) into total immersion.   There are images of Adam Zer0 layered over one another, at various scales.

-Adam Zer0 shaved and bald and blank before a circular static-filled fisheye tv screen, in a completely blank room.

-Adam Zer0 in Steve McQueen “Bullitt” mode: a lean, mean piece of work, cleaning his guns.

-Adam Zer0 engaged in a feverish tantric kung-fu battle with Kali-Ma Kaligula, the femme fatale/lunatic supervillain of his mythos. an image that splices absolute elegance and absolute brutality.

Diorama of ritualized teen angst. centering on Joe Nuthing, an emotionally empty and alienated seventeen year old high school student.  Listening to demonic glitchy nightmare muzik. Casually watching gruesome action movies.  Playing ultraviolent Adam Zer0 video games. His only friend is another misfit named Damian. They spend their free time popping Ritalin, learning the way of the ninja, and reading “Guns’n'Ammo” magazines like other kids read comics or playboys. The narration is still in the second person, inviting you into the life of Joe Nuthing, a ticking teenage timebomb waiting to go off on every living thing it sees. Like a CGI setup for the Columbine video game.  Maybe the scene is suffused with LABRATZ merchandise.  LABRATZ is a cartoon screwed-up kids get obsessed with.  It’s set in a laboratory.  The experimental rat characters are identically blank and miserable, except for one.  In every episode, one rat rouses the rabble and brings the lab to the brink of revolution, with a career path modeled on a modern dictator.  Hitler or Stalin or Dick Cheney or Idi Amin.  Then the fluorescent bulbs come on like a sickly flickering sun and the scientist enters, grabs the rat in question, shoots it full of ome brain-melting chemical, and leaves the rats in a disappointed, dreamless stupor.  The LABRATZ Empire is comparable to Disney.  Their themepark is called LABRATZ AMERIKA.  All of Joe’s fashions and toys should be based on LABRATZ.

Damian comes over in the morning, like he always does, so they can walk to school together and maybe not get beat up or egged by passing cool kids.  Joe is eating a bowl of Labratz Glo-in-the-dark Rit-a-Bitz.  There’s an gun on the table.  His supine mother’s legs might be visible through the doorway.  She’s bleeding to death on the kitchen floor.  There are four big camo dufflebags (full of guns and ammo) by the front door.  Damian is confused.  Joe says “today’s the day”.  He hands the uzi to Damian.  ”santa came.  everything we talked about.  it’s all coming true.”  Damian is confused, but intoxicated by the weight of the gun in his hand.  It’s like a dream he’s having.  He’s afraid to ask questions.  He might wake up.  They stare at each other with something like love.  ”It’s on” they say in unison.  Joe grabs the lunch his dead mother packed for him.  They grab the dufflebags.  They’re going to school.  It’s all a commercial for this suspicious breakfast.

CAPTION:

THIS DAY IS A SCHOOLDAY LIKE ANY OTHER, ALMOST.  YOU WAIT FOR DAMIAN AND THEN HE GETS HERE AND THEN YOU WALK TO SCHOOL.

The grounds and halls of Kakodelphia West High School.  So many tomorrows.  Repeating shots of the boys advancing on the school, late for class.  Bells ringing.  Locker doors slamming.  Libraries and gymnasiums.  Perhaps a bubble of stillness as the boys have entered the school, sulking at the threshold of their great adventure.  Putting on their sunglasses.  A pause before the slaughter.

WE ARE THE POLICE!  WE HAVE THE SCHOOL SURROUNDED!  MORE VIOLENCE WOULD BE FUTILE!  DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEADS!

Men in MK0 combat suits (like SWAT team/Delta Force gear but more fetishy, emblazoned with the ZER0! brand, an iconic Amerikan five-pointed star with a “0” in it) pour into the room, dragging in a gurgling retard clone of Joe, wearing the same clothes he’s wearing.

CAPTION:

NOW YOU REMEMBER.  THE CLEANERS ALWAYS BRING A BRAIN-DEAD CLONE OF WHOEVER YOU’RE PRETENDING TO BE.  THEY MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE A SUICIDE.

PANEL FIVE:

They take Damian’s gun and shoot the clone.

JOE (to Damian’s corpse):

YOU WERE A GOOD SOLDIER.

PANEL SIX:

Men in black suits with secret service headsets escort joe out the back door of the school, flanked by soldiers, to a 1961 Lincoln presidential limousine, the car JFK was killed in, motor running, the driver dressed in special forces combat gear.

MAN IN BLACK:

FLAWLESS OPERATION, ZER0.  DR. GREENBAUM WILL BE SO PROUD OF YOU.

Joe Nuthing staring out the window of the car with a steely adult intensity.  He’s a  little disoriented, seeing the ruins he always leaves in his wake when it’s time to slough another skin.

MAN IN BLACK:

WE’LL HAVE YOU BACK AT THE INSTITUTE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, AGENT ZER0.  SAY GOOD-BYE TO ANOTHER EXPIRED LIFE.

JOE:

I GUESS.  WHATEVER.  GAME OVER.

PANEL TWO:

The car is racing away from the school in its state of siege.  A couple of cops make as if to leap into their squad car and give chase, but a Delta Force type trains his gun on them and says

SOLDIER:

NEVER MIND THAT CAR.  IT’S OVER.  GET YOUR ASSES IN THERE AND HELP US CLEAN UP.

CAPTION:

A MOMENT OF TENSE “WHO’S THE ALPHA DOG?” GAMESHOW MUSIC.

PANEL THREE:

Then they go towards the school with the other cops and the paramedics.  Doing as they’re told.  Screaming, blood-splattered students and teachers.

You’ll be groovin’ to The Kings and diggin’ Howie’s prowess on a longboard… er, just ignore those pesky tentacles reaching out from the waves to drag you to YOUR DOOM!!

“Beach Blanket Beyond” is directed by Brian Allard and features Joel Durham, Danika Grundemann, Andrew Bray, Lissie Lewis, Nik Hoback, Tom Mounsey, and Bill Holznagel. Read the forthcoming graphic novel, written by Jason Squamata and illustrated by Sir Richard Wentworth.

Alba The Vampire

Follow spunky heroine “Alba The Vampire” as she looks for love in all the wrong places—and finds it! In the lithe arms and yummy lips of the dancing wonderfulness of fellow hottie vamp Holly! But to keep her newfound lady love, Alba must first outwit a pair of witless vampire hunters, defeat a vamp hitman with something mighty big in his pocket, and take on (*cringe!*) the King Of The Vampires himself! It’s THE no-holds-barred vamp challenge of the millennium with True Love at stake… uh, like that.
